The Charity Listings database is not user-friendly. Please provide dictionary, better metadata and aggregate database. More recent data is available on CRA website.

I also agree, its very hard to use this data; it should include the charities name, not just the BN

Hello: Some of the data is useful but it only lists business numbers and that it is a charity. I would like to see the Registered Charity Number before I will donate to the organization. I like this type of open public information which is independent and unbiased. Request: Please add the Registered Charity Number to the results of the search, as the organization I was checking on does not list it on their web site (i.e. only the BN and that it is Active as a charitable organization for a "Community Organization, (not else classified)". Thank you.

The following response has been posted on behalf of the data owner : The Charities Listings contains multiple data sets that relate to all Canadian Registered charities. Specifically, from the “Identification” dataset, the BN (registration number) and charity name can be found. From this, all other tables can be cross-referenced to the BN for additional information. If a charity is identified within the dataset, it is a confirmation that it is a registered charity, if not, it could be because it is a Non-Profit organisation or a non-registered charity. Unfortunately, the CRA does not have any control as to whether a charity displays their registration number on their own website. Additional information can also be found on the Charities Listing website (http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/chrts-gvng/lstngs/menu-eng.html

Many of the data files (e.g. Fin.csv) contain multiple fields with numeric headings (e.g. 4020,4050,4100). Without some sort of dictionary/metadata, this is largely useless data since there is no indication of what these headings mean.

Thank you for your comment. The following response has been posted on behalf of the data owner : Additional metadata was recently added to the portal that provides contextual information to your question. Specifically, the PDF file entitled “Completing the Registered Charity” provides the explanation of what the numeric headings specify. For example, 4020 indicates the charity’s financial information; whether it is reported on an accrual or cash basis.

The links provided surely would not meet passing standards in any educational institution. Please make the effort to be clear and concise and use appropriate formatting. I was very disappointed.

The Charity Listings database only includes 2012 data. Is there also data from other years available? For research purposes I'm hoping to find this data.

I second the previous post regarding other years of data. Historical comparisons could be very interesting. Also, when will the next financial information update be available (presumably with 2013 data)?

I agree that more user-friendly metadata is required for many of the data files (e.g. Fin.csv) to provide brief field names and descriptions for numeric headings (e.g. 4020,4050,4100). Using the PDF file “Completing the Registered Charity Form” to create field names for a database is a VERY time-consuming process.
