What are the values in “Whole industry Total revenue” and what is the definition In Total_revenue_2015_5M_20M Many are close to the quartile ranges, so not sure what it is.

Hi Paul, Thanks for your comment. I have forwarded your inquiry to the data owner for their response. Stay tuned! Regards, Momin The Open Government team

Hi Paul, Here's the response from the data owner: The value in Whole Industry Total Revenue is the average revenue for the number of businesses in that particular industry. Please refer to the Data Dictionary file which contains more information. Below is the definition of Total Revenue and Quartiles. Total Revenue Total revenue includes revenue from the sale of goods and services, interest, dividends, commissions, rent and other sources of revenue. It excludes capital gains or losses, extraordinary gains or losses and equity in net income of related parties. The variable is: total revenue (8299). Quartiles The quartiles divide all of the small and medium-sized businesses that operate within the selected industry into four groups (quartiles) of the same size based on levels of revenue generated. Each profile contains groupings within the whole revenue range. To define the quartiles, the businesses are first ranked from lowest to highest operating revenue. Then, the sample is divided into four parts, a bottom quartile, a lower middle, a upper middle and a top quartile. The Bottom quartile consists of the 25% of businesses with the lowest reported operating revenue. The Lower middle consists of the 25% of businesses with reported operating revenue above the cut-off for the Bottom quartile and below the median revenue level. The Upper middle consists of the 25% of businesses with reported operating revenue above the median revenue level and below the cut-off for the Top quartile. The Top quartile consists of the 25% of businesses with the highest reported operating revenue. I hope this helps. Regards, Momin The Open Government team

I am looking at "Total_expenses_percentage_2015_5M_20M" and I expect that somehow the sum expenses to equal the "Total", Unfortunately the sum of the cost components does not come close to 100%. Any thoughts about it?

Hi Andre, We have listed the variables for our top calculation below. It is important to remember that these are averages and rounded numbers, so in some cases totals will change as a result (e.g., a number may appear as 10.5 rather than 10.6). We have reviewed the columns and have not encountered any errors; please let us know if there is something we’ve missed. Please note that the percentage of businesses reporting (last column on application) is not a calculation but the number of businesses that provided numbers for that variable. Financial Performance Totals: Total Revenue Cost of sales (direct expenses) = Wages and benefits + Purchases + Opening Inventory – Closing Inventory Operating expenses = Labour and Commissions + Amortization + Repairs + Utilities + Rent + Interest and Bank Charges + Professional Fees + Advertising + Deliveries + Insurance + Other Expenses Total Expenses = Cost of Sales (Direct Expenses) + Operating Expenses (Indirect Expenses) Total profit/Loss = Total Revenue – Total expenses Balance Sheet Total Assets = Total Current Assets + Net Tangible and Intangible Assets + All Other Assets and Adjustments Total Current Assets = Accounts Receivable + Closing Inventory + Other Current Assets Total Liabilities = Total Current Liabilities + Long Term Liabilities Total Current Liabilities = Current Bank Loans + Other Current Liabilities Total equity (plus /minus) = Total Assets – Total Liabilities Hope that helps! Natalia - Check the data dictionary- Stats Can typically includes subtotals in its datasets (highly annoying until you figure that out...) 15= Atlantic Canada 49 = Prairies >> so you want to remove those records and see if you can tie it out.

Hi, In the report "Revenue_totale_2015_30K_5M ", the sum of the number of businesses by province (province 10 to 62) do not equal to the total Canada (00). For exemple, for the category 283 "specialty trade contractors". Is there a reason for that? Thanks!

Are the values in Total_expenses_value_2015_30k_5M in millions? For example, is the bottom quartile cost of sales 1.3 million?

Hi Jerry, the values are in millions. So yes the bottom quartile cost of sales would be 1.3 million. Hope that helps! Momin The Open Government team
