Forest fires

Wildfire mapping shows forest fires that occurred mainly in southern Quebec. These mapping data help to improve knowledge of fire regimes and meet the specific needs of special forest fire management plans. They can also be used to address a variety of study and research needs, such as climate change impact analysis, after-fire regeneration modelling, and ecosystem dynamics study. This information is obtained from and produced from a variety of sources, including satellite imagery, aerial photographs, field and aerial surveys, dating of fire scars and archival documents. These data contain four types of mapping: • Detailed fire mapping from 1976 to present. These data include the types of burns, total and partial burns, where information is available. In addition, for fires that have been the subject of characterization, information on fire patterns classes. The minimum mapping area can be up to 0.1 ha, depending on the source products used. • Simplified light contour mapping from 1972 to present. It presents the external contours of the lights (without fragmentation), in order to represent them globally in a product easily usable and integrable in common information systems, GPS or other. As a result of the merging of detailed fire mapping, this product has been designed to meet a variety of customer needs. • The mapping of fire origin points that have been identified by the protection agencies (e.g., SOPFEU) for the period 1972 to present. It includes the date, the source of ignition (human or lightning) and the protection zone. • The mapping of ancient fires refers to fires that occurred between the very end of the 19th century and 1975. Fire outlines are derived from forest maps in the first and second inventory, in addition to information contained in the ecoforestry maps of the third and fourth inventory. The dating of the fires is made from sample plots comprising the analysis of fire scars and archival documents. These data are only available for the regions: Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean (02), Bas-Saint-Laurent (01), Gaspésie-Îles-de-la-Madeleine (011) and Abitibi-Témiscamingue (08).
