Forest fires

The forest fire mapping shows forest fires that occurred mainly in southern Quebec. These mapping data are used to improve knowledge of fire regimes and to meet the specific needs of special forest fire management plans. They can also be used to meet a variety of study and research needs, such as climate change impact analysis, post-fire regeneration modelling, and ecosystem dynamics. This information is obtained from and produced from a variety of sources, including satellite imagery, aerial photographs, field or aerial surveys, dating of fire scars and archival documents. These data contain four types of mapping: • Detailed fire mapping, 1976 to present. These data include burn types, total burn and partial burn, where information is available. In addition, for fires that have been characterized, information on the classes of fire patterns is provided. The minimum mapping area may be up to 0.1 ha, depending on the source products used. • Simplified mapping of fire contours from 1972 to present. It presents the external contours of the lights (without fragmentation), in order to represent them in a comprehensive way in a product that is easily usable and can be integrated into common information systems, GPS or other. As a result of the merger of detailed fire mapping, this product was designed to meet a variety of client needs. • The mapping of fire origin points has been identified by protection agencies (e.g., SOPFEU) for the period 1972 to present. It includes date, source of ignition (human or lightning) and protection zone. • The mapping of ancient fires refers to fires that occurred between the late 19th century and 1975. The contours of the fires are derived from the forest maps of the first and second inventories, in addition to the information contained in the ecoforest maps of the third and fourth inventories. Fire dating is based on sample plots including analysis of fire scars and archival documents. These data are only available for the regions: Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean (02), Bas-Saint-Laurent (01), Gaspésie-Îles-de-la-Madeleine (011) and Abitibi-Témiscamingue (08).This third party metadata element was translated using an automated translation tool (Amazon Translate).
