The Government Affairs Unit has reviewed the briefs for the SRSR study Use of Federal Government Research and Development Grants, Funds, and Contributions by Canadian Universities and Research Institutions in Partnerships with Entities Connected to the People’s Republic of China.

In submissions to the Standing Committee on Finance’s pre-budget 2024 consultation, health research stakeholders expressed support for implementation of the Advisory Panel’s report recommendation to increase investments in base budgets of the federal research granting agencies.

The majority of CIHR’s increased funding is for targeted health research investments, with most of them being time-limited funded initiatives.

Health researchers continue to be supportive of the recommendations made in Canada’s Fundamental Science Review report (2017). Many stakeholders have called for increased funding for fundamental science and research in Canada.

Research is central to our domestic and international efforts to address COVID-19 and the Canadian research community has risen to the challenge at an unprecedented pace.

As a result of Supplementary Estimates (B), CIHR’s overall available and statutory authorities for 2022-23 will increase by approximately $106.1 million to a total of $1,351.7 million.

International moonshot programs have led to major successes, improving livelihoods of people around the world. One example is the U.S. government-funded Cancer Moonshot which in four years has supported over 240 research projects identifying mechanisms that drive cancer and developing new treatments

The International Surveillance Border Study by McMaster Health Labs is designed to determine the effectiveness of an airport-based COVID-19 surveillance program, and inform effective testing and quarantine models.

Canadians and people around the world are expecting the international research community to quickly develop and rollout safe vaccines and therapies to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic and return to a more normal life.
