We’re celebrating the worldwide Open Data Day on March 2nd, 2019 by looking at Canada’s open data numbers and accomplishments.

Since the Open Government portal launched in 2011, we’ve learned a lot about releasing data and information. We’ve heard from data users and curators, worked through challenges and shared knowledge.

Thanks to all of you who participated in sharing your ideas on what you’d like to see in Canada’s 4th National Action Plan on Open Government for 2018-2020! We heard from over 9,500 of you both online and in person and have received over 5,000 comments, ideas and questions.

Digital service are never fully “completed,” (iterative development for the win!) and open.canada.ca is no exception. This week, we are excited to say that we’ve made a foundational investment to support future responsiveness by migrating the infrastructure of open.canada.ca to cloud hosting and upgrading to Drupal 8. Ideally, you didn’t even notice.

The Open Government team at the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat is delighted that Canada has been elected to a seat on the Open Government Partnership’s Steering Committee.

You may have noticed a change to our site’s landing page this week: there’s only one search window now instead of searches for “open data,” “open information,” and “open government.” While it may seem minor, it is the result of months of work done behind the scenes.

CKAN is an open source data management software that enables open data programs in governments, non-profits, and businesses all over the world. Canada’s Open Government Portal is powered by CKAN and our Open Government team actively contributes to the core development of this robust suite of tools.

From April 24 to October 20, 2014, the Government of Canada conducted public consultations in support of developing Canada’s Action Plan on Open Government 2014-2016.

The International Open Data Conference (IODC) kicks off in exactly one week in Ottawa. The conference will bring together open data experts, government officials, industry leaders, and civil society champions from around the world.
