Records identify Canadian involvement in the "Demonstration Project for Borehole Disposal of Radioactive Sources via the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)" for "disposal" for disused and expended radiological sources in countries with small quantities of such material, including in Malaysia and Ghana including funding through Global Affairs. The IAEA has identified Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL), Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL), and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) as participating organizations in the IAEA Coordinated Research Project on Borehole Disposal, and during a 2019 presentation described the pilot projects as having “crystallised wide interest in the borehole disposal concept for DSRS and small quantities of low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste” and identified six countries, including Canada, as “commencing the path to implementation of DSRS borehole disposal in the coming years”. Please provide all records related to the involvement of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission in the IAEA Coordinated Research Project on Borehole Disposal, and all records pertaining to or describing research related to borehole disposal undertaken or reviewed by the CNSC, exchanges of information related to borehole disposal or borehole disposal research with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Atomic Energy of Canada Limited, Natural Resources Canada, Global Affairs Canada, Canadian Nuclear Laboratories, and/or the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO). Specifically, please provide all records pertaining to any evaluation or consideration by CNSC of any potential locations for the implementation of borehole disposal in Canada, including but not limited to the Chalk River laboratory site, the Whiteshell laboratory site, the NWMO candidate sites in Kenora District or Bruce County, and the nuclear generating stations in Ontario, Quebec and New Brunswick.
