According to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission “packages requiring certification have to undergo stringent testing since improper packaging can give rise to severe consequences. Testing must simulate both normal and accident conditions of transport. The tests can include free-drop testing, puncture testing, thermal testing and aircraft accident simulations.” Under Certificate Number CDN/2052/B(U)-96 (Rev. 8) the Nuclear Waste Management Organization’s Used Fuel Transportation Package (UFTP) was most recently recertified in 2018-05-01, with an expiry date of 2023-07-31. Please provide all documentation of all testing of the Nuclear Waste Management Organization’s Used Fuel Transportation Package (UFTP) received, reviewed and / or relied upon in the initial certification and subsequent recertifications of the UFTP, including free-drop testing, puncture testing, thermal testing, and submersion testing. In particular, please include all information and/or documentation related to full scale testing of the UFTP. This request extends to documentation received, reviewed and / or relied upon with respect to Ontario Power Generation’s “Prototype Irradiated Fuel Cask” (October 1988, Report No. RMEP-IR-00531.1-24-1), as the predecessor design to the Nuclear Waste Management Organization’s Used Fuel Transportation Package.

Request Modified on 2023-02-01: Provide copies all records and reports of surface water quality (including pH and uranium values) in possession of the CNSC for the Gunnar Mine site (i.e. Langley Bay, Zeemel Bay, St. Mary's Channel) from 2019-present and for the Lorado Mill site (i.e. Nero Lake, Beaverlodge Lake) from 2016-present. Provide copies of briefing notes and correspondence with the licensee and the Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment relating to the statement regarding uranium concentrations in Langley Bay provided on page 132 of Regulatory Oversight Report for Uranium Mines, Mills, Historic, and Decommissioned Sites in Canada: 2020 "CNSC staff reviewed the results of SRC’s analyses and found that most of the contaminants were consistent with the previous years and with the 2014 Gunnar environmental impact statement [22]. As a result of the ongoing remediation activities at Gunnar, there were increases in uranium concentrations at the monitoring stations located in Langley Bay. CNSC staff will continue to review annual reports to determine whether this is a long-term trend. The ongoing remediation activities are not having a noticeable effect on the water quality at the other monitoring stations.
