Status

Status of Open Government Plan milestones (complete, substantial, limited, not started)

Complete:

  • 4.1 Enhance the Open Information Portal on Open.Canada.ca to improve access to digital publications made available by the federal government and develop a strategy to ensure the sustainability of access over time.
    • TBS has developed an Open Information metadata element set to describe all open information resources. Users can now search both data and information together on open.canada.ca, previously these two collections had two separate searches which created a challenging user experience. TBS has also developed guidance and training materials to assist departments with contributing open information to open.canada.ca.
  • 4.3 Increase Canadians’ access to records documenting the continuing memory of the Government of Canada.
  • 4.4 Update Library and Archives Canada’s online archive of the Government of Canada’s web presence to ensure Canadians’ long-term access to federal web content.
    • LAC has archived all web content scheduled to be moved to Canada.ca from .gc.ca domain
  • 4.5 Expand the implementation of the government-wide information technology solution for the effective management of federal records and documents (GCDOCS) as a foundation for improved transparency:
    • 4.5.1 Roll out this common solution managed by Public Services and Procurement Canada to 125,000 government workers across government departments by June 2018.

Substantial:

  • 4.2 Develop and publish clear guidelines on the preservation and retention of digital content.
    • Draft of Open Government Guidebook (including retention and preservation for digital content on the Open Government Portal) is completed and in consultation. On track for completion in June 2018

Other completed milestones:

  • As of June 2018, 133,526 federal government workers are using GCDOCS.
  • In October 2016, the new Open Information Portal was launched, providing enhanced, centralized, one-stop access to digital content from across government. As of November 30th 2016, this collection holds 52 Government of Canada publications.
  • In October 2016, the publishing platform, registry.open.canada.ca, was relaunched to consolidate the publication process for all open government resources. This includes, open data, open information, proactive disclosure reports, access to information summary reports, open data inventories. Prior to this, there were 3 different publishing platforms.
Challenge
  • We are working on a document to provide comprehensive and authoritative guidance on requirements for publishing open information. Have a look at our Open Government Guidebook and and let us know what you think.
