Major Roads
Contained within the 3rd Edition (1957) of the Atlas of Canada is a map that shows the status of major Canadian roads and ferry routes circa 1955. Roads are indicated as being paved, gravel or improved. The majority of the roads are provincial highways. Each provincial highway is identified by its highway number. The map highlights the Trans-Canada Highway, which was under development in the 1950s. The portions of this road, on this map, are classed on the basis of road surface, and also on their construction status. Note that no portion of this highway is shown for Quebec as that province was not a party to the Federal-Provincial agreements concerning construction of the highway in the 1950s. The map also has a large table showing road distances between major centres in Canada.
