Dune Integrity - Prince Edward Island

Dune Integrity - Prince Edward Island Dune systems are key features in protecting assets, land, and ecosystems behind them from the effects of storm surges, wave action, salt spray, as well as preventing salt water intrusion into coastal waterways and aquifers. The dune integrity measure is comprised of two sub-measures: (1) dune movement rate (meter/year), and (2) the number of 500 m dune sections that exceed 7 social trails. In 2012, methods developed by the US Geological Service to measure shoreline movement were used to generate dune movement rates between survey years using dune shoreline positions acquired from high resolution (30 and 50 cm resolution) remote sensing images and are compared against historical rates. The same images were also used to detect and count the number of trails passing through fore and inland dune areas.
