Geology of Tavani map-area (55K), District of Keewatin
Tavani map-area, situated on the west side of Hudson Bay, is in the Churchill Structural Province. Metamorphosed volcanic and sedimentary rocks of the Kaminak Group, and intrusive plutons are well exposed in the southern half of the area, and in the Rankin Inlet area. They are overlain by sedimentary and volcanic rocks of the Hurwitz Group. The northwestern part of the area is heavily drift-covered. It is a region of gneissic and migmatitic rocks derived in part from rocks of the Kaminak Group. Folds in both the Kaminak Group and the Hurwitz Group trend northeast. Numerous rusty zones and gossans occur in the metavolcanic rocks of the Kaminak Group, and many have been examined by drilling and trenching.
