Maritimes Coastal Biodiversity Monitoring Program - 2019 Beach Seining

Maritimes Coastal Biodiversity Monitoring Program - 2019 Beach Seining In summer 2019, beach seining and paired environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling was conducted at ten sampling sites in coastal Nova Scotia, ranging from the Lunenburg area to the province’s Eastern Shore. A 25-metre Danish bag seine was deployed by boat twice at each site to capture fish and invertebrates data for a baseline of animal diversity at these sampling sites, and to compare with fish diversity captured in the eDNA samples. Each individual fish was identified, and a random subset of 50 to 100 individuals per species were measured for total body length, to examine the size distribution of each species. Invertebrates were noted but not quantified, and regularly included sand shrimp (Crangonidae), Mysids, Periwinkles (Littorina littorea), and invasive green crab (Carcinus maenas). The results of the fish diversity and eDNA metabarcoding comparisons are published by He et al.
