Indigenous Geographical Names

Indigenous Geographical Names The Indigenous Geographical Names dataset presents an extract from the Canadian Geographical Names Data Base (CGNDB) of geographical names with roots in Indigenous cultures. These geographical names reflect heritage, language, personal names, and cultural practices. Terrain and water features, populated places and culturally relevant places are geographical feature types present in the dataset. The Geographical Names Board of Canada (GNBC) is working to increase awareness of existing Indigenous place names and help promote the revitalization of Indigenous cultures and languages. Many more Indigenous place names exist in Canada, and this dataset will be constantly evolving as additional Indigenous place names are officially recognized and identified. The Geographical Names Board of Canada does not warrant or guarantee that the information is accurate, complete or current at all times. For more information, to report data errors, or to suggest improvements, please contact the GNBC Secretariat at Natural Resources Canada with questions or for more information. The CGNDB is the authoritative national database of Canada's geographical names. The purpose of the CGNDB is to store geographical names and their attributes that have been approved by the GNBC, the national coordinating body responsible for standards and policies on place names. This dataset is extracted from the CGNDB on a weekly basis, and consists of current officially approved names, feature type, coordinates of the feature, decision date, source, Indigenous language of origin where known, and other attributes. 2022-12-12 Natural Resources Canada geonames-toponymes@nrcan-rncan.gc.ca Form DescriptorsGovernment and PoliticsSociety and CultureCanadaGNBCIndigenous toponymyIndigenous languagesToponymyGeographyIndigenous cultureGeographic data Indigenous Geographical NamesESRI REST https://maps-cartes.services.geo.ca/server_serveur/rest/services/NRCan/GNBC_CTC_indigenous_toponymy_en/MapServer/0 Indigenous Geographical Names (English OGC WMS web service)WMS https://maps-cartes.services.geo.ca/server_serveur/services/NRCan/GNBC_CTC_indigenous_toponymy_en/MapServer/WMSServer?request=GetCapabilities&service=WMS Indigenous Geographical Names (French OGC WMS web service)WMS https://maps-cartes.services.geo.ca/server_serveur/services/NRCan/GNBC_CTC_indigenous_toponymy_fr/MapServer/WMSServer?request=GetCapabilities&service=WMS Indigenous Geographical Names (English Comma-separated values file)CSV https://ftp.maps.canada.ca/pub/nrcan_rncan/vector/geobase_cgn_toponyme/prov_csv_eng/cgn_indg_csv_eng.zip Indigenous Geographical Names (French Comma-separated values file)CSV https://ftp.maps.canada.ca/pub/nrcan_rncan/vector/geobase_cgn_toponyme/prov_csv_fra/tc_indg_csv_fra.zip Indigenous Geographical NamesKML https://ftp.maps.canada.ca/pub/nrcan_rncan/vector/geobase_cgn_toponyme/prov_kml_eng/cgn_indg_kml_eng.kmz Indigenous Geographical NamesKML https://ftp.maps.canada.ca/pub/nrcan_rncan/vector/geobase_cgn_toponyme/prov_kml_fra/tc_indg_kml_fra.kmz Indigenous Geographical NamesSHP https://ftp.maps.canada.ca/pub/nrcan_rncan/vector/geobase_cgn_toponyme/prov_shp_eng/cgn_indg_shp_eng.zip Indigenous Geographical NamesSHP https://ftp.maps.canada.ca/pub/nrcan_rncan/vector/geobase_cgn_toponyme/prov_shp_fra/tc_indg_shp_fra.zip Indigenous Geographical NamesESRI REST https://maps-cartes.services.geo.ca/server_serveur/rest/services/NRCan/GNBC_CTC_indigenous_toponymy_fr/MapServer/0 Indigenous Geographical Names (Bilingual ESRI File Geodatabase)FGDB/GDB https://ftp.maps.canada.ca/pub/nrcan_rncan/Toponymy_Toponymie/GNBC_indigenous_toponymy_CTC_toponymie_autochtone/GNBC_CTC_indigenous_toponymy.gdb.zip Indigenous Geographical Names (English ESRI ArcMap project file)MXD https://ftp.maps.canada.ca/pub/nrcan_rncan/Toponymy_Toponymie/GNBC_indigenous_toponymy_CTC_toponymie_autochtone/GNBC_CTC_indigenous_toponymy_en.mxd Indigenous Geographical Names (French ESRI ArcMap project file)MXD https://ftp.maps.canada.ca/pub/nrcan_rncan/Toponymy_Toponymie/GNBC_indigenous_toponymy_CTC_toponymie_autochtone/GNBC_CTC_indigenous_toponymy_fr.mxd
